Electives

The global environment of the new millennium will present new challenges as we prepare this next generation for the workplace and life in general. The electives offered will concentrate on developing skills necessary for achievement in a challenging society. There will be high tech as well as practical hands-on training in subjects ranging from Computers to Creative Writing, Media to Money Management. The elective studies offered will augment a very solid core curriculum enabling the student to progress and grow in whatever area of life he or she chooses.


English Electives

Creative Writing (Prerequisite: None, Grades 11 and 12)
This course is for students who would like to develop a proficiency in writing various types of essays. Students will be exposed to the different styles of expression which will include; short stories, journals, poetry and screen plays. 0.5 credit

Journalism(Prerequisite: None, Grades 11 and 12)
The goal of this course is to teach students the art of newspaper and yearbook production. Skills acquired in this course will include: Interviewing, collecting information, reporting, editing, photography, design and layout. The digital camera and software related to graphics and design will be used throughout this course.0.5 credit



Fine Arts Electives

Performing Arts (Prerequisite: None, Grades 9, 10, 11 and 12) The students in this performance based course will develop an awareness of the importance of theater and music to the individual and society. This class will require all students to participate in hands-on activities such as creative writing, drama, vocal work, directing, production and set design. In addition, the class will attend various theatrical productions. 0.5 credit

Foundations in Art I (Prerequisite: None, Grades 9, 10, 11 and 12)
The purpose of this art course is to provide an interesting and worthwhile curriculum for the preparation of future artists and also to encourage the recognition of artistic talent and ability. This course will encompass a wide and varied scope of fields, such as color, design, perspective, sculpture, drawing, painting, as well as the history behind these fields. This is a comprehensive art course for students seeking to enhance their creative skills. .5 credit

Foundations in Art II (Prerequisite: Successful completion of Art I)
This course continues the introduction of art design elements with the inclusion of 3 dimensional design elements. A survey of art history will be a part of the class experience, and projects will become more individualized and sophisticated. 0.5 credit

Music Appreciation (Prerequisite: None, Grades 9, 10, 11 and 12)
This course will cover the listening and discussion of musical styles from the Medieval and Renaissance periods through the Baroque and Classical-Romantic periods up to and including the present. Eastern music styles will also be explored. A study in music and how to improve listening skills will sharpen the student's perception of diverse musical styles. Elements studied will include; melody, harmony, rhythm, tempo, and dynamics. 0.5 credit

Directed Study in Music (Prerequisite: None, Grades 9, 10, 11 and 12)
This course will involve the student in instrumental and/or vocal training in a group setting. Ensemble and choral opportunities will be available at different levels (according to ability) for students desiring to grow in the musical arts. Elements studied will include; music performance, theory, arranging, composition and worship. 0.5 credit


Computer Education Electives

Computer Literacy/Word Processing (Prerequisite: None, Grades 9, 10, 11 and 12)
This course is designed to introduce the student to the computer and to various computer applications for their personal use and for use in the business world. Students will be exposed to the Internet, a review of the touch-method of keyboarding will be introduced, word processing skills using WORD, spreadsheet skills using EXCEL, and database management using ACCESS. All three programs are part of MICROSOFT OFFICE. 0.5 credit

Desktop Publishing/Media Presentation (Prerequisite: None, Grades 10, 11 and 12)
Students will be introduced to basic concepts of desktop publishing which include graphics, character and line spacing, text alignment and fonts, columns, and drawing techniques. Students will also learn how to develop slides with text and graphics. This course will be taught using MICROSOFT PUBLISHER, and POWERPOINT. 0.5 credit

Videotography (Prerequisite: None, Grades 11 and 12)
Students will learn the role of a technical assistant in a video studio. Experiences in production planning, production techniques and procedures, including video, audio and postproduction activities such as editing, duplication, and video storyboarding will be taught. 0.5 credit



Finance Electives

Money Management (Prerequisite: None, Grades 10, 11 and 12)
This course will teach students how to find gainful employment and manage their money. They will learn about their financial responsibilities and be prepared to make informed choices on their own. The topics include: Career Decisions, Money Management and Financial Security. 0.5 credit

Economics (Prerequisite: None, Grades 11 and 12)
This course will help students gain an understanding of our economic system by presenting a mixture of theory and consumer economics. Study will include the money and banking system, stock market, national debt, production and distribution of goods and services, buying and selling, GNP, as well as the basics of personal finance. 0.5 credit
