Literature

The English curriculum offers a blend of contemporary and classical authors emphasizing genre and theme within a chronological manner. Included is a comprehensive, consistent approach to grammar, comprehension, vocabulary development and instruction allowing literature to be relevant to students. A variety of workshops to foster proficient written and oral communication skills will be infused. This series empowers the teacher to reach all students with different strengths and abilities.

The Gold Level (Grade 9)
An exciting blend of literature, organized around meaningful, student-centered themes, including works by writers ranging from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet to Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven to Maya Angelou’s New Directions. In the writing process workshop students will learn how to write a persuasive essay, informational report, short story, poetry, and a research paper. Gold level also includes twenty step-by-step writing workshops and twenty lessons on real-world reading skills. 1 credit

The Platinum Level (Grade 10)
Literature by writers such as Robert Frost, Wislawa Szymborska, Emily Dickinson, Mark Twain and Rudyard Kipling captures the shared hopes and concerns of people from around the world and spanning all eras. The writing process workshop consists of lessons in a reflective essay, a multimedia presentation, a narrative poem, literary analysis, and a position paper. The Platinum level also includes twenty step-by-step writing workshops and twenty lessons on real-world reading skills. 1 credit

The American Experience (Grade 11)
Each unit captures the dominant themes of a period in American history and shows how literature reflects those themes. Writers range from Pulitzer Prize winning writer Alice Walker, to Thomas Jefferson, co-author of the American Constitution, which provides Americans with their treasured rights that have withstood the test of time. The writing process workshops focus is on skill development in creating a statistical report, a travel brochure, a job portfolio and a research report. 1 credit

The British Tradition (Grade 12)
This volume spans over 1,500 years of British literary history capturing literature ranging from the legendary epic Beowulf to Virginia Wolf's fiction to the poetry of Derek Wolcott. Other engaging authors include Jonathan Swift, William Wordsworth and Charles Dickens. The writing workshop emphasis is on the college application essay, editorial, video script and final research paper. 1 credit
